Toyota Celebrates 25 Years of Production in Canada

Toyota began producing vehicles north of the border in 1986. Since then, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada has gone on to become a very successful endeavor for the Japanese automaker. While other American automakers have downsized their presence in provinces like Ontario over the years, Toyota has continued to increase its workforce, ensuring that more hardworking men and women have jobs.
"(Toyota Motor Manufacturing) has become one of Toyota's largest, most successful manufacturing operations in the world,'' explains Toyota Motor Corporation President, Akio Toyoda. "It has done so by consistently exceeding expectations."1
And exceeded they have! Over the years, the operation has expanded from a single plant in Cambridge, Ontario, with a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year, to a total of three plants in and around the area that can produce up to 458,000 vehicles annually. Even more impressive is the fact that when Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada started out, it employed a total of 1,000 workers. Today, the three Canadian plants employ over 6,600.
This milestone is only one of many that Toyota is celebrating this week too. The company recently opened a new manufacturing facility in Mississippi, while its plant in Georgetown Kentucky also celebrated 25 years of solid manufacturing. These celebrations are, of course, most welcome after the lengthy production setbacks that Toyota faced from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that truck Japan in March, followed by the recent flooding at production facilities in Thailand.
